Naturopathic medicine is a system of health care that uses natural therapies to treat, prevent, and diagnose disease. The primary goal of naturopathic medicine is to address the causes of illness rather than simply treating or suppressing the symptoms. A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) assesses the whole person – taking into consideration physical, mental, and emotional aspects of an individual when developing a customized treatment plan.
Naturopathic medicine is beneficial for individuals of all ages, for acute and chronic health conditions, and for those who simply wish to maintain good health and prevent disease. With a focus on addressing the underlying cause of illness and treating the whole person, naturopathic medicine can help to reverse disease and/or significantly improve overall quality of life. Through naturopathic health care, individuals commonly experience improvements in energy, sleep, digestion, stress, and overall sense of well-being.
Some of the conditions that can benefit from naturopathic health care include:
Initial Visit – Your first visit with one of our Naturopathic Doctors will be approximately 60 minutes in length. During this initial consultation, the naturopath will take an extensive health history, discuss your primary health concerns, and review any medications and/or supplements that you may be taking.
Second Visit – The second visit is usually one week after the initial visit and is also approximately 60 minutes in length. During this visit, the naturopath will perform a comprehensive physical exam, order any appropriate diagnostic tests, and discuss your personalized treatment plan.
Follow-up Visits – Initially, follow-up visits are typically 30 minutes and are spaced one month apart. These visits allow the Naturopathic Doctor to review your progress, address any additional health concerns, and make appropriate changes to your treatment plan. As your health begins to improve, visits may be spaced further apart.
Our Naturopathic Doctors use various medical tests to identify the underlying causes of your health concerns. Such tests may include detailed analysis of blood, hair, saliva, urine, and/or stool samples.
Examples of specific tests available include:
- Hormone saliva or blood tests
- Fertility & pregnancy tests
- Food allergy/intolerance blood tests
- Blood tests for evaluating risk of heart disease
- Conventional blood tests
Your individualized treatment plan may include a combination of the following naturopathic treatments:
Nutritional Counseling – Dietary recommendations are made to ensure optimal nutrition and to promote your body’s self-healing ability.
Lifestyle Counseling – Emphasis is placed on education and personal guidance to assist you in health enhancing lifestyle changes.
Botanical Medicine – Customized combinations of herbs are prescribed to address your specific health concerns.
Acupuncture – Acupuncture needles are inserted at specific locations in the body to re-establish balance and health. Cosmetic acupuncture for facial skin care and wrinkle reduction is also available.
Homeopathy – Small doses of substances from nature are used in the form of homeopathic medicines to stimulate healing.
